A carbon monoxide detector or CO detector is a device that detects the presence of the carbon monoxide (CO) gas in order to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. CO detectors are designed to measure CO levels and if the levels start to approach dangerous levels an alarm will sound giving people enough time to safely ventilate the area or evacuate. Some system-connected detectors also alert a monitoring service that can dispatch emergency services if necessary.

A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, to indicate a possible fire. Residential smoke detectors will sound an alarm (audible and visual) when smoke is detected. Commercial smoke detectors will send a signal to a fire alarm control panel as part of a fire alarm system.
